The Katenies Research and Management Services Logo
Katenies is a Mohawk name that was given to me at birth. Katenies, as told to me by my father Teonietathe (where did you come from) means that which is constantly changing like the seasons of the year. The circle signifies the cycle of life and the four cycles of the seasons – spring, summer, fall and winter. The circle represents the unity of the earth, moon, sun and stars. The woman, in Mohawk society, signifies that from which the lineal descent of our people shall run. Women are considered the founders of our nation. They own the land and the soil and men follow the status of their mothers. Women heirs of Sachems are called clan mothers for all time to come. Women are givers of life and live so that generations will renew. Women perform important political and religious functions. Women nurture the family and are the teachers of our young.
The woman’s clothing is signified by the traditional calico overdress and skirt which is a dark color and long. The eagle feathers signify strength, truth, wisdom and freedom. The eagle represents many virtues of our people and exemplifies the solidarity of nations, when unity is required.
